Top Neighborhoods in Murray for Families, First-Time Home Buyers, Investors, Retirees, and Young Professionals

Murray sits dead center in the Salt Lake Valley, about 10 miles south of downtown Salt Lake City with I-15, I-215, and three TRAX stations inside city limits. It's one of the few Salt Lake County cities with its own school district (Murray City School District), its own police and fire departments, and its own power utility. That mix of central location and small-city independence is why it draws such different kinds of buyers. Here's where each of them tends to land.

For Families: The Murray Park Area

The streets around Murray City Park (roughly 5300 South and 500 East, along Vine Street) are the most family-oriented part of the city. The park itself runs along Little Cottonwood Creek and has an outdoor pool and aquatic center, a year-round indoor ice rink, an amphitheater, ball fields, tennis courts, and the Murray Farmers Market on summer and fall weekends. Parkside Elementary sits right next to the park, and Murray High School is a short drive down State Street. For First-Time Home Buyers: The Fireclay District

Fireclay is Murray's transit-oriented redevelopment district on the north end of the city, between Main Street and I-15 around 4300 South. It's where you'll find the city's densest supply of townhomes and condos, including the Birkhill at Fireclay townhome community, plus several newer apartment buildings. Murray North TRAX station (Blue and Red lines) is a few blocks' walk from most of it. If you want to buy in Murray on an entry-level budget without giving up the ability to commute downtown or to the University of Utah by train, this is usually where the search starts.

For Investors: The State Street and Fashion Place Corridor

Murray's rental demand is anchored by two big employers and one big shopping center: Intermountain Medical Center at 5121 South Cottonwood Street (one of the largest hospitals in the state), Fashion Place Mall at 6100 South State Street, and the office and medical buildings that cluster around both. Fashion Place West TRAX station serves the south end, and Murray Central Station, where TRAX meets the FrontRunner commuter train, serves the middle of the city. Housing along this corridor is a mix of older single-family homes, small multi-unit buildings, and condos, which gives investors more product types to work with than most suburbs in the valley.

For Retirees: East Murray near Cottonwood Street

The east side of Murray, between State Street and 1300 East, is quieter and more established, and it puts you within a few minutes of Intermountain Medical Center and its surrounding clinics. Wheeler Historic Farm (6351 South 900 East) and Willow Pond Park (6059 South Murray Park Avenue) are the neighborhood green spaces, and Fashion Place Mall and the Cottonwood Street medical offices handle most errands without getting on a freeway. One thing to check on the east side: some streets past roughly 1300 East fall in Granite School District rather than Murray's, which matters for resale even if you don't have kids at home.

For Young Professionals: Downtown Murray and the Historic District

Murray's original downtown runs along State Street and Vine Street around 4800 South. The Murray Downtown Residential Historic District (on the National Register since 2005) is a 20-acre pocket of Victorian-era and early-1900s homes, a few blocks from restaurants and bars on State Street, the restored Murray Theater, and Murray Central Station. It's the closest thing Murray has to a walkable, character-home neighborhood, and the FrontRunner connection at Murray Central means you can get to downtown Salt Lake, Ogden, or Provo without driving.
