Best Schools in Murray, Utah: A Parent's Guide from a Local Realtor

I am Sam Holman with Real Brokerage, LLC. I grew up in Salt Lake, I am a Utah native, and I have spent more than 16 years helping people buy and sell homes across the Salt Lake valley. Murray is one of the cities I know best, and schools come up in almost every conversation I have with a family looking here.

This is the guide I wish existed when a client asks me, “So which school would we be in?” Every school below is listed with the grades it serves right now, its address, and a link to its own website so you can check anything yourself.

First, the thing that confuses almost everybody in Murray

Murray has its own school district — Murray City School District — and that is unusual. Most of the Salt Lake valley is covered by a handful of large districts. Murray runs its own.

Here is where it gets confusing. The Murray city limits and the Murray City School District boundary are not the same line. Murray’s own city government says so plainly: several schools inside the city’s boundaries belong to Granite School District instead. The reason is history. Murray annexed land in 1905 to reach the population it needed to form its own district. The city kept growing after that. The school district boundary did not grow with it.

So in Murray you are dealing with four different boundaries that do not line up:

1. Your ZIP code (84107 and 84123 both spill outside the city)
2. Your mailing city (some Granite District schools have a “Murray, UT” mailing address)
3. The Murray city limits
4. The Murray City School District attendance boundary

A home can have a Murray address and be zoned to Granite District schools. It happens, and it surprises people at the worst possible moment. There is only one reliable way to know, and I have put it in the questions and answers below.

Murray City School District schools

Elementary schools (grades K–6)

• Grant Elementary — K–6 — 662 West Bulldog Circle (6140 South), Murray, UT 84123
• Horizon Elementary School — K–6 — 5180 South Glendon Street, Murray, UT 84123
• Liberty Elementary School — K–6 — 140 West 6100 South, Murray, UT 84107
• Longview Elementary School — K–6 — 6240 South Longview Drive, Murray, UT 84107
• McMillan Elementary School — K–6 — 315 East 5900 South, Murray, UT 84107
• Parkside Elementary School — K–6 — 5175 South Parkside Drive, Murray, UT 84107
• Viewmont Elementary School — K–6 — 745 West Anderson Avenue (5720 South), Murray, UT 84123

Junior high schools (grades 7–9)

• Hillcrest Jr. High School — 7–9 — 178 East 5300 South, Murray, UT 84107
• Riverview Junior High School — 7–9 — 751 West Tripp Lane (5755 South), Murray, UT 84123

High school (grades 10–12)

• Murray High School — 10–12 — 5440 South State Street, Murray, UT 84107

Read that grade range again, because it catches people out. Murray High is currently 10–12, not 9–12. Ninth graders in Murray are still at Hillcrest or Riverview. I see this stated wrong constantly in real estate listings and on national school-rating sites. It is changing — see the next section — but today it is 10–12.

Preschool and transition programs

• Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) — preschool — 73 West 6100 South, Murray, UT 84107. The district’s preschool, using the HighScope curriculum.
• Murray Adult Transition (MAT) — 147 East 5065 South, Murray, UT 84107. A district program for young adults ages 18–22 with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The district office is at 5102 South Commerce Drive, Murray, UT 84107, and the main number is (801) 264-7400.

Big changes are coming in 2027–28, and you should know about them before you buy

Murray voters approved a $125 million bond in November 2024. Riverview Jr. High is being rebuilt and Murray High is being expanded, with both finished in 2027 and occupied that August. Along with the buildings, the district is changing how the grades are split.

Starting in 2027–28, Murray moves to a middle school model:

• Ninth graders move up to Murray High School, which becomes 9–12
• Sixth graders move up to Hillcrest and Riverview, which become 6–8 middle schools
• Elementary schools become K–5

The Board also approved the feeder pattern that goes with it, effective 2027–28:

• Hillcrest Middle School will take students from Longview, McMillan, and Parkside
• Riverview Middle School will take students from Grant, Horizon, and Viewmont

And there is one more thing I would not want you to hear about after you close. The Board has Liberty Elementary under consideration for closure effective 2027–28. This is not final. There is a public hearing on October 1, 2026, comment periods on October 15 and November 12, 2026, and the Board’s final decision on December 10, 2026. Approved alongside it, and dependent on it, are boundary changes that would move current Liberty students to Longview, McMillan, or Parkside depending on where they live.

If you are looking at a home near 6100 South and 140 West, or anywhere currently zoned to Liberty, this is something to factor in and to watch. Granite District schools with a Murray address

These are not Murray City School District schools, but Granite School District lists them with a Murray mailing address, and they serve homes in and around Murray:

• Cottonwood High School — 9–12 — 5715 South 1300 East, Murray, UT 84121
• Woodstock Elementary — PK–6 — 6015 South 1300 East, Murray, UT 84121

Note the ZIP: 84121, which is not one of Murray City’s ZIPs. If your address is 84121, you are almost certainly looking at Granite District, and you should use Granite’s own lookup tool rather than Murray’s.

One correction I want to make here, because Murray City’s own website is out of date on it: Twin Peaks Elementary closed at the end of the 2022–23 school year. You will still find it listed in places. It is gone.

Charter school options

• Academy for Math, Engineering & Science (AMES) — grades 9–12 — located on the Cottonwood High campus at 5715 South 1300 East. A small, application-based charter high school focused on math, engineering, and science. Admission is by application and lottery, not by address, so where you live does not determine whether you get in.
• Utah Virtual Academy — grades K–12 — 310 East 4500 South, Suite 620, Murray, UT 84107. Be clear on what this is: it is a statewide online charter school whose offices happen to be in Murray. Students attend from anywhere in Utah. Living in Murray gives you no advantage in getting in, and there is no campus your child would attend.

There is no charter school in Murray that works the way a neighborhood school does. If a charter matters to your family, apply early and do not count on it when you are choosing a house.

How do school boundaries actually work here?

Murray City School District assigns each home to one elementary, one junior high, and to Murray High School. The assignment follows the street address, not the ZIP code and not the mailing city. That distinction matters more in Murray than in almost any other city in the valley, for the reasons at the top of this article.

The district also uses distance rules for busing: 1.5 miles for elementary, 2.0 miles for secondary. Four schools — Grant, Liberty, McMillan, and Viewmont — are walking schools with no bus service at all. If you are buying with a kindergartner and no second car, that is worth knowing before you write an offer, not after.

How do I check which schools a specific address feeds?

This is the single most useful thing in this article, so here it is plainly.

Murray City School District uses a tool called School Locator and Bus Eligibility. You type in an address and it tells you the assigned schools and whether the home qualifies for busing:

If the address comes back outside the district, or if your ZIP is 84121, use Granite School District’s School Search Tool instead.

If you want a human being, Murray’s boundary contact is Amber Robison at (801) 264-7400. Granite’s Boundaries Department is at boundaries@graniteschools.org.

What if I want a school my address is not assigned to?

Utah has open enrollment, and Murray participates. The district calls it Open Enrollment, and the form is the Non-Resident and Out-of-School Boundary Application.

The window is set by Utah state law, and it is earlier than most people assume:

• Early window: November 15 through the first Friday in February, for the following school year. You get an answer by March 31.
• Late window: the Monday after that first Friday in February, through the end of the school year. Answers come the Friday before school starts.

Two things to know. There is a $5 non-refundable processing fee per application, and each application names one school only — you cannot list backups. Acceptance depends on whether that school has room, and the district publishes a capacity report showing which schools have open seats.

Everything, including the current forms, is at the district’s registration page.

I want to be honest about the limits of open enrollment when you are buying a home. It is a real option and families use it successfully every year. But it is granted on available space, it is not guaranteed, and it can be revoked. Do not buy a house you would not be happy in if the transfer were denied. I have watched that go badly.

Which elementary schools feed into Hillcrest versus Riverview right now?

The honest answer is that the district does not publish a current feeder chart. I looked, including through Murray City’s own document library. For the 2026–27 school year, the address locator above is the answer, or a phone call to Amber Robison.

What is published is the 2027–28 pattern I listed earlier, because the Board voted on it in August 2026. I am not going to print a current-year chart I cannot source. If someone hands you one, ask them where it came from.

Do schools really affect home values in Murray?

Yes, but not the way people expect, and I am not going to put a percentage on it because anyone who does is guessing.

What I actually see in Murray is this. Homes zoned to a school a family wants tend to sell a little faster and draw a few more showings, especially in spring when families are timing a move around the school year. That shows up as time on market and negotiating position more than as a big number on the price.

The bigger factor in Murray specifically is certainty. A buyer who is confident about the school assignment moves faster than one who is not. Right now, with the Liberty decision pending and the grade reconfiguration coming in 2027, there is more uncertainty in Murray than usual — and that cuts both ways. It creates hesitation on some streets, and it creates opportunity for a buyer who has actually read the Board motions and knows what is coming.

I would also say this. Murray’s real advantage is not any one school’s rating. It is that the district is small — around 6,000 students — and that Murray High serves the whole city. Families here tend to stay through graduation, and kids go through school with the same group from kindergarten on. That is uncommon in a valley this size, and it is a big part of why people who grow up in Murray come back to raise their own kids here.

Choosing a school and choosing a house are the same decision in Murray, and the boundaries here are genuinely tricky.
