Nearly every public school in Sandy belongs to Canyons School District, which split from Jordan School District in 2009 and now serves Sandy, Draper, Midvale, Cottonwood Heights, and Alta. The district office is in Sandy, at 9361 S. 300 East.

The structure is simple:

Sandy has 17 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 3 high schools, several specialty programs, one charter school, and four private schools inside its city limits. That is a lot of choice for a city of about 96,900 people, and it is one of the reasons families keep landing here.

Jordan High is the older of the two — the Beetdiggers have been in Sandy since 1907, making it one of the oldest public high schools in Utah, and the name comes from the sugar beet fields that used to cover this valley floor. Alta High, up at 11055 South, serves the newer south and east side of the city.

Two high schools just outside Sandy serve Sandy families. Depending on where in the city you buy, your children may be zoned to Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights or Hillcrest High School in Midvale. Both are Canyons District schools. This surprises people constantly, and it is the single best reason to check an address rather than assume.

CTEC is worth knowing about even if you have a traditional student. Juniors and seniors from across the district take career and technical courses there — things like nursing, welding, automotive, and computer science — while still attending their home high school.

Beehive is a tuition-free public charter with a STEM focus. Because it is a charter, it does not use boundaries — any Utah family may apply, and seats are filled by lottery when applications exceed spaces.

Several more charters sit just over the line in Draper, close enough that Sandy families drive to them every morning: Channing Hall (K–8, 13515 S. 150 East), Summit Academy's Draper elementary and junior high campuses on 13200 South, and three American Preparatory Academy campuses in Draper covering K through 12.

How do school boundaries work in Sandy?

Canyons School District draws an attendance boundary around every school. If your home address falls inside that boundary, your child has a guaranteed seat at that school. If it falls outside, they do not — no matter how close you live or which school you can see from your driveway.

Boundaries follow streets, canals, and creeks rather than neighborhood names, so two houses on opposite sides of the same road can be zoned to different schools. In Sandy this happens often enough that I never assume. I look it up every time, for every address, before a client writes an offer.

How do I check which schools a specific Sandy address feeds into?

Use the district's own tool. Canyons publishes a School Finder where you type in a street address and it returns the assigned elementary, middle, and high school. That is the authoritative answer — not a real estate listing, not a school-rating website, and not me.

This matters more than people realize. Listing sites pull school data from third parties, and that data goes stale after every boundary change. I have seen listings show the wrong high school. Before you fall in love with a house, put the address into the district's finder yourself.

The district also publishes interactive boundary maps for elementary, middle, and high schools, so you can see the shape of a zone before you start touring homes.

Are Sandy's school boundaries changing right now?

Yes, and this is live information worth having.

On December 2, 2025, the Canyons Board of Education approved boundary changes effective with the 2026–2027 school year, including feeder adjustments affecting Brookwood, Glacier Hills, and Oakdale elementary schools here in Sandy.

Then on May 5, 2026, the Board voted to pause two proposed consolidations: one that would have combined Granite and Quail Hollow elementary schools, and another that would have combined Park Lane and Willow Canyon. All four schools, plus Lone Peak, continue operating with their existing boundaries for 2026–2027 while the district conducts a broader review of enrollment trends through the coming school year.

What that pause does not mean is “settled.” The Board’s Long-Range Planning Committee is continuing its work through the 2026–2027 school year, and a decision affecting the 2027–2028 school year could come as late as December 2026. If you are buying near Granite, Park Lane, Quail Hollow, Willow Canyon, or Lone Peak, that is a live deadline, not a distant one — and it is worth asking me to check the current status before you write an offer rather than after.

If you are buying in the Granite, Quail Hollow, Park Lane, Willow Canyon, or Lone Peak areas, know that these five schools are under active study. That is not a reason to avoid those neighborhoods — they are some of the prettiest parts of east Sandy — but you should go in with your eyes open. What is open enrollment, and can I get my child into a school outside my boundary?

Often, yes. Utah has open enrollment, and Canyons District calls it School Choice. It lets you apply to a school outside your boundary, and if that school has room, your child can attend.

Here is how the timing works. The early window opens November 15 and closes the first Friday in February for the following school year. Schools respond with acceptances no later than March 6, and you then have 10 calendar days to confirm by email or the offer is withdrawn. A late window stays open year-round, with schools typically responding within 30 days. Applications go through the district's portal at permits.canyonsdistrict.org, and the form is available in English, Spanish, and French.

Two honest cautions. First, a permit is not a guarantee — when a school is full, applicants go on a waiting list, and the most sought-after Sandy schools do fill. Second, you are generally responsible for getting your child there. Open enrollment is a real option, but I would not buy a house on the assumption that a permit will come through.

Do schools affect home values in Sandy?

They do, though not in the simple way people expect.

What I see in practice is competition. When two similar Sandy homes come on the market at a similar price, and one sits in a boundary parents are actively hunting for, that home tends to draw more showings and more offers. Over time that shows up in price. It also shows up in resale: a home in a well-regarded boundary usually has a wider pool of buyers when you go to sell, which is worth something even if you never have children in the district yourself.

What I would not do is treat school ratings as a stand-in for value. Sandy's price differences are driven at least as much by lot size, age of the home, and whether you are on the east bench with a view or down on the valley floor. • Which three schools does this exact address feed? Elementary, middle, and high — confirmed in the district's School Finder, not from the listing.
• Is this address in an area affected by the current boundary study? Especially near Granite, Quail Hollow, Park Lane, Willow Canyon, or Lone Peak.
• How will my child actually get there? Walking route, bus eligibility, or a drive. Sandy's east bench streets climb, and a route that looks short on a map can be a real hill in February.
• If I am counting on a charter or a permit, what is my backup? Know which boundary school you would attend if the lottery or the permit does not come through.
