Best Schools in Riverton, Ut: A Parent's Guide from a Local Realtor
If you are looking at homes in Riverton, Utah, schools are probably somewhere near the top of your list. They should be. In Riverton the school a house feeds into is not a small detail — it can be different on two sides of the same street, and it can change while you own the home.
I am Sam Holman, a Realtor with Real Brokerage, LLC. I grew up in the Salt Lake Valley and I still live here, and I have spent more than sixteen years walking families through exactly this question. Below is every public and charter school that serves Riverton families — with grade levels, addresses and a link to each school’s own website — followed by the questions parents actually ask me when we are standing in a driveway trying to decide.
How schools are organized in Riverton, Utah
Riverton is served by the Jordan School District, and the district’s grade structure surprises people who move here from out of state:
- Elementary schools: kindergarten through 6th grade
- Middle schools: 7th through 9th grade
- High schools: 10th through 12th grade
That means ninth grade happens at the middle school, not the high school. If you are coming from a state where ninth grade is freshman year on a high school campus, plan for it — it changes which building your fourteen-year-old walks into.
One more thing worth knowing up front: Riverton sits on the edge of several school boundaries. Plenty of Riverton addresses feed schools that carry a Herriman, South Jordan or Bluffdale address. Those are still your schools. I have marked them clearly below so nobody is caught off guard.

High schools serving Riverton, Utah (10–12)
| School | Grades | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Riverton High School | 10–12 | 12476 S. Silverwolf Way, Riverton, UT 84065 |

| Bingham High School | 10–12 | 2160 South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, UT 84095 |
Riverton High, home of the Silverwolves, is the only high school inside Riverton city limits. But Riverton homes feed all four of these depending on where you are in the city, and that is one of the most common surprises I run into with buyers.
Two specialty schools, both in Riverton
| School | Serves | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Jordan Academy for Technology & Careers (JATC South) | High school students — career & technical programs | 12723 South Park Ave., Riverton, UT 84065 |
| Kauri Sue Hamilton School | Students ages 5–22 with significant multiple disabilities | 2827 West 13400 South, Riverton, UT 84065 |
JATC South is worth knowing about even if your student is happy at their home high school. Riverton, Herriman, Mountain Ridge and Bingham students can take courses there in fields like health science, engineering, information technology, business and skilled trades, and still graduate from their own school.
Kauri Sue Hamilton is a center-based special education school serving roughly 300 students from across the district. If you have a child with significant disabilities, having this school inside Riverton is a genuine reason families choose this side of the valley.
Charter schools near Riverton, Utah
There is no charter school inside Riverton city limits. There are several within a short drive, and because charters do not use attendance boundaries, any Riverton family can apply to any of them — you apply and, if there are more applicants than seats, you go into a lottery.
| School | Grades | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Providence Hall | K–12 | 4557 West Patriot Ridge Drive, Herriman, UT 84096 |
| Salt Lake Academy – West Herriman Campus | K–8 | 12309 Mustang Trail Way, Herriman, UT 84096 |
| Salt Lake Academy – Zion Campus | 9–12 | 14787 S. Academy Pkwy, Herriman, UT 84096 |
| Early Light Academy | K–9 | 11709 S. Vadania Drive, South Jordan, UT 84009 |
| American Academy of Innovation | 6–12 | 5410 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, UT 84009 |
| Paradigm Schools | 6–12 | 11577 South 3600 West, South Jordan, UT 84095 |
One note, because it trips people up: the school formerly known as Athlos Academy of Utah, at 12309 Mustang Trail Way in Herriman, has been acquired by Salt Lake Academy and now operates as its West Herriman K–8 campus. If you are reading an older list of Riverton-area charters, that is why the name does not match.
Summit Academy also runs campuses in Bluffdale and Draper that some Riverton families drive to.
Charters do not provide the busing a district school does, so the drive is a real part of the decision. I have had families fall in love with a charter and then quietly move their kids back to their boundary school after a year of two round trips a day. Be honest with yourself about the commute before you commit.
A parent’s guide to Riverton, Utah schools: the questions I actually get asked
How do school boundaries work in Riverton, Utah?
Every address in Riverton is assigned to one elementary, one middle and one high school by the Jordan School District. You do not choose these — they come with the house.
Boundaries are drawn using demographic and GIS planning software, with input from the Board of Education, city leaders and district administrators. They are not permanent. When a new subdivision fills in or a school hits capacity, the district redraws.
The most important thing I can tell you: a boundary is not a neighborhood. Two homes on the same cul-de-sac, in the same HOA, at the same price, can feed different middle schools. I have seen it more than once in Riverton. Never assume a boundary from a subdivision name, and never take a listing agent’s word for it — including mine. Look it up.
How do I check which Riverton schools a specific address feeds?
Use the district’s own tools. These are the only sources I trust, and they are free and public:
- Jordan School District School Boundary Look Up — an interactive map. Click the map or the school-year link, find the address, and it shows you the elementary, middle and high school that address is assigned to. Make sure you are looking at the correct school year.
- Transportation’s “InfoFinder” bus stop lookup, on that same page, for bus stop and busing eligibility. Bus stops can shift over the summer and are finalized in early August, so an assignment you check in April may have a different stop in September.
- boundary.jordandistrict.org — where the district posts upcoming boundary changes. Check this one before you write an offer, not after.
If a home is anywhere near a boundary line, I check all three before my clients go under contract. It takes five minutes and it has changed which house a family bought more than once.
Are school boundaries changing in Riverton right now?
Yes — and this one matters if you are buying in Riverton this year.
The Jordan Board of Education approved changes for the 2026–27 school year affecting students who live in the Midas Creek Elementary boundary:
- All middle school students in the Midas Creek Elementary boundary will attend Oquirrh Hills Middle School.
- All high school students in the Midas Creek Elementary boundary will attend Riverton High School.
The Board also approved moving a small area of the Elk Ridge Middle School boundary from West Jordan High School to Bingham High School. Transportation is provided for eligible students.
If you are looking at homes in the Midas Creek area, the school your student will attend may not be the school the neighbors’ older kids attended. Households directly affected by a boundary change are notified in advance by the district — but a buyer who has not closed yet is not on that list. That is a gap I watch for my clients.
What is open enrollment, and can we choose a different Riverton school?
Yes. Utah has open enrollment, and in Jordan School District it is handled as a school choice permit. You apply online, separately from your regular registration in Skyward Family Access, to attend a school other than your boundary school.
There are three windows, and which one you land in changes your odds:
- Early enrollment: November 15 – December 31. Requests are considered by category, priority and/or lottery. This is the window to aim for.
- Early enrollment phase 2: January 1 – the first Friday in February. First come, first served.
- Late enrollment: after the first Friday in February. Evaluated based on staffing ratios — meaning it depends on whether the school has room.
The permit window for the 2027–28 school year opens November 15, 2026 at 12:01 a.m. Once a permit is approved you do not have to reapply every year, but permits end when a student moves from elementary to middle, or middle to high, and when a student leaves the district. Full details and the application are on the district’s Open Enrollment / School Choice page.
Here is my honest advice. Open enrollment is real and people use it successfully. But I have never recommended that a buyer purchase a home counting on a permit to a specific school. A permit is a request, not a guarantee, and popular schools fill. If a particular school is non-negotiable for your family, buy inside its boundary.
How much do schools affect home values in Riverton, Utah?
More than most sellers expect, and in a specific way.
Riverton’s buyer pool is heavily families. When two homes are genuinely comparable — similar size, similar age, similar condition, a few minutes apart — the one in the more sought-after boundary tends to draw more showings and sell faster. That shows up first in days on market and in how many offers a listing gets, and only then in price.
What I want you to take from that is practical, not dramatic:
- If you are buying, a school boundary is one of the few things about a house you cannot renovate. You can replace a kitchen. You cannot move a boundary line. Weigh it accordingly.
- If you are buying and do not have school-age children, the boundary still matters, because it will matter to whoever buys the home from you.
- If you are selling, naming the actual assigned schools in the listing is worth doing, and getting it right is worth more. A wrong school in a listing is the kind of error that unravels a deal late.
And a caution: do not buy a house purely on a school rating you read on a third-party site. Those ratings lean heavily on test scores, which track neighborhood demographics as much as anything a school does. Go tour the building. Talk to the front office. Ask a neighbor with a kid the same age. That tells you far more than a number out of ten.
What should I ask before I write an offer on a Riverton home?
Five questions, every time:
- Which elementary, middle and high school does this exact address feed, confirmed on the district’s boundary map for the school year my child will start?
- Is this address in any announced boundary change on boundary.jordandistrict.org?
- Is there a bus stop, and how far is the walk to it?
- If we want a charter, what is the drive at 7:45 a.m. — not at noon?
- Is my student going to a middle school for ninth grade, and are we ready for that?
How I help Riverton families match schools to homes
This is the part of my job I like most. Matching the right schools to the homes that are actually for sale in Riverton is not something a search filter does well — filters use city names, and Riverton’s boundaries do not respect city names.
So when I work with a family moving to Riverton, we start with the schools, not the houses. You tell me what matters — a specific elementary, a shorter bus ride, staying out of an upcoming boundary change, a charter you are willing to drive to — and I search by boundary, then show you what is available inside it. If the honest answer is that your school and your budget do not overlap in Riverton right now, I will tell you that, and we will look at what does work, whether that is Herriman, South Jordan or Bluffdale.
I am a Utah native, I live in the Salt Lake Valley, and I have been doing this for over sixteen years. I work with buyers and with sellers, and I would rather you have the right information than a quick transaction.
If you are moving to Riverton, Utah and want help lining up schools with homes, get in touch with me here — I am glad to walk your list with you.
School names, grade levels and addresses above were verified against Jordan School District and each school’s own website. Boundaries and enrollment dates change; always confirm a specific address on the district’s boundary map before making a decision.
