Best Schools in Millcreek, Utah: A Parent's Guide

If you are looking at homes in Millcreek, Utah, the school question comes up fast — usually before the second showing. Millcreek is a city of about 63,000 people wedged between Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake on the north and Murray and Holladay on the south, running east up the benches toward the Wasatch. It is almost entirely served by Granite School District, and because Millcreek only incorporated as a city in 2016, a lot of what you will read online still files these schools under "Salt Lake City." That makes it genuinely hard to figure out which schools are actually yours.

This is the guide I wish existed when clients ask me. Every school below is listed with its real grade levels and address, and every name links to the school's own website. After the lists, I answer the questions I get asked most about boundaries, open enrollment, and what schools actually do to home values here.

How schools in Millcreek, Utah are organized

Millcreek homes are served by Granite School District, the third-largest district in Utah. If you have been in the valley a while, the important thing to know is that the grade structure changed. Granite used to run elementary through sixth grade, junior high for seventh through ninth, and high school for tenth through twelfth. That is over. As the district's own planning page puts it: "As of the 2025-2026 School Year, the entire district will be K-5, 6-8, and 9-12."

So in Millcreek today, elementary runs kindergarten through fifth grade, junior high covers sixth through eighth, and high school starts in ninth grade. If you are moving here from another Utah district — or reading an older article — expect to see the wrong grades listed. Every grade span in the tables below was checked against the individual school.

Granite draws an attendance boundary around each school. If your address falls inside that boundary, your child has a guaranteed seat. If it falls outside, they do not — regardless of how close you live or which school you can see from your front porch. That single fact is why the address matters as much as the house.

Only one high school is physically inside Millcreek — Skyline. But Millcreek is a long, narrow city, and homes on its southern and western edges feed to Olympus in Holladay or Cottonwood in Murray. All three are ninth through twelfth grade.

Millcreek's borders are irregular, and plenty of Millcreek addresses feed to schools in Holladay, Murray, or South Salt Lake. If you are shopping the edges of the city, these are the ones to know.

Charter schools in and near Millcreek, Utah

Charter schools are public and tuition-free, but they do not use attendance boundaries. Anyone in Utah can apply, and seats are awarded by lottery when applications exceed spaces. Living across the street from one gives you no advantage unless the school has a sibling or staff preference that applies to you.

Canyon Rim Academy — K–6 — 3005 South 2900 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84109. This is the only charter school physically inside Millcreek. It is a long-established neighborhood charter in the Canyon Rim area, and note that it still runs through sixth grade even though Granite's elementaries now stop at fifth.

Two more charters sit close enough that Millcreek families regularly attend:

Wasatch Waldorf Charter School — K–8 — 1458 East Murray-Holladay Road, Holladay, UT 84117.

Academy for Math, Engineering and Science (AMES) — 9–12 — 5715 South 1300 East, Murray, UT 84121. AMES shares a campus with Cottonwood High and admits by application from across the valley.

Alternative and specialty programs

Westbrook Continuation School at 3225 South 800 East in Millcreek is Granite's continuation program for students who need a different path to a diploma than a comprehensive high school offers. Granite Connection High School at 501 East 3900 South in South Salt Lake serves a similar role and is the closest such campus to most of Millcreek. Grade spans for both programs depend on placement — contact the school directly.

How do school boundaries work in Millcreek?

Granite School District draws an attendance boundary around every school. If your home address falls inside that boundary, your child has a guaranteed seat at that school. If it falls outside, they do not — no matter how close you live or which school you can see from your driveway.

Boundaries do not follow city lines, and in Millcreek they very often cross them. A home on the south end of Millcreek can easily feed to schools in Holladay. A home near 3300 South might feed differently than one six blocks away. Two houses on the same street can occasionally land in different boundaries. This is the single most common surprise I see, and it is entirely avoidable.

How do I check which schools a specific Millcreek address feeds into?

Use Granite's school finder at maps.graniteschools.org/schoolsearch. Type in the exact street address and it returns the assigned elementary, junior high, and high school, along with bus eligibility.

Do this for every address you are seriously considering, and do it before you write an offer — not after. Do not rely on the school listed on a real estate portal. Those are pulled from third-party data that is frequently out of date, and in Millcreek they are wrong often enough that I check every one myself. Are Millcreek's school boundaries changing right now?

No. Granite's 2026-27 boundary page states plainly that there are no boundary changes and no new closures for the 2026-2027 school year. At the November 2025 public hearing the board paused its boundary studies district-wide.

That said, this is worth watching rather than assuming. In September 2025 the district proposed closing Eastwood Elementary in Millcreek and moving those students to Oakridge, along with converting Morningside Elementary into a French dual-language immersion campus. After public hearings and significant pushback from parents, the board voted unanimously on November 19, 2025 to suspend the study indefinitely. Both schools remain open. But the underlying pressure — declining birth rates and falling enrollment across the valley — has not gone away, and the board signaled it may eventually run a district-wide study instead. What is open enrollment, and can I get my child into a school outside my boundary?

Yes, often. Utah has open enrollment, which means you can apply to a school outside your boundary and the school must accept you if it has room. Granite's process lives at graniteschools.org/ssp/open-enrollment.

Two things to understand. First, there is an early application window in the fall and decisions go out at the end of March — apply in the early window, because that is when the most seats are available. Late applications are considered only if room remains. Second, and this is the part people miss: open enrollment does not include transportation. If your child attends outside your boundary, you are driving them, every day, both ways. Sit with what that means for your mornings before you plan a purchase around it. And because window dates shift year to year, confirm the current dates directly with the district before you count on them.

Do schools affect home values in Millcreek?

They do, and in Millcreek the effect is unusually visible because the city contains such a wide range of housing. The neighborhoods on the east bench feeding Skyline High — Canyon Rim, Mount Olympus, the streets climbing toward Millcreek Canyon — carry a clear price premium over comparable square footage on the west side of the city. Some of that is the mountain views, the larger lots, and the canyon access. But a meaningful piece of it is the school assignment, and it shows up in both price and days on market.

What that means practically cuts two ways. If you are buying, a boundary line can be worth real money — sometimes tens of thousands of dollars for a house that is otherwise the same as the one a block over. Occasionally you can find a home that feeds to the school you want while sitting just outside the neighborhood everyone is bidding on. If you are selling, your school assignment is a selling point worth naming specifically in the listing, and I do.

I would add one honest caution. Do not buy a house you do not love for a school your child will attend for four years. The house is the thing you live in every day for much longer than that. The best outcome is finding both, which is usually possible in Millcreek if you start early enough.

What should I ask when I am house shopping in Millcreek?

• Which elementary, junior high, and high school does this exact address feed into today — verified on the district's school finder, not a listing site?
• Is this address near a boundary line, and has that line moved in the last few years?
• How far is the commute to each of those three schools, and is the home in a bus-eligible zone?
• If we want a charter like Canyon Rim Academy, what is the lottery situation and what is our fallback if we do not get a seat?
• Am I paying a premium for this school assignment, and if so, roughly how much of this price is that?
• If my child is entering sixth grade, do I understand that sixth grade in Granite is now junior high, not elementary?
