When families call me about Midvale, Ut, the first question is almost never about square footage. It's "which school would my kids go to?" It's a fair question, and it's one a lot of listing sites answer badly — they'll show you a school rating from three years ago and skip the part that actually matters, which is whether that school is the one your address is zoned for.

1. How Schools in Midvale, Ut Are Organized

Midvale is served by Canyons School District, which was created in 2009 when the east-side communities split from Jordan School District. Canyons covers Midvale, Sandy, Draper, Cottonwood Heights and Alta.

The grade structure is simple and consistent across the district:

• Elementary school — kindergarten through 5th grade (several Midvale schools also run preschool)
• Middle school — 6th through 8th grade
• High school — 9th through 12th grade

Midvale is unusual in one good way: it has four neighborhood elementary schools inside a city of just under six square miles. Most families here are within a short drive — often a walk — of their assigned elementary.

Jordan Valley is a Canyons District school located in Midvale that serves students from across the district. It has a therapy swimming pool, multi-sensory environment rooms, an on-site nurse station, and provides speech and language therapy, physical and occupational therapy, music therapy and adapted P.E. Families relocating with a child who has significant medical or developmental needs should know it's here — a lot of districts don't have anything like it.

3. Charter School Options Near Midvale, Ut

I'll be straight with you: there is no brick-and-mortar charter school inside Midvale city limits. Families here who want a charter either go online or drive a few minutes to a neighboring city.

• Utah Connections Academy — a tuition-free, statewide online public charter school serving grades K–12, with offices at 6965 S. Union Park Center, right on Midvale's east edge.
• Beehive Science & Technology Academy — grades 6–12, 2165 E. 9400 South in Sandy. A STEM-focused charter, roughly a ten-minute drive from most of Midvale.
• Channing Hall in Draper and Itineris Early College High School in West Jordan are two more that Midvale families commonly look at.

Charters admit by lottery, not by address, and grade ranges and open seats change from year to year — so check each school's own site for its current application window before you build a home search around one.

4. What Actually Makes These Schools Worth Knowing About

Hillcrest High is an International Baccalaureate school. It is the only high school in Canyons District offering the IB Diploma Programme, alongside AP, concurrent enrollment and career and technical education. For a family with an academically driven kid, that is a real, specific reason to want a Midvale address rather than a generic "good schools" reason.

Hillcrest's building is brand new. The original 1962 school was torn down and replaced using a 2017 district bond. The new Hillcrest — four stories, which the district says makes it the only school of its height in Utah — opened with a ribbon-cutting in August 2021 on the same 38-acre campus, with views out to the Oquirrhs and the Wasatch. The auditorium kept historic elements from the old theater.

Midvalley Elementary was rebuilt too. Its new building opened for the 2020–21 school year, with skylights on every floor, a new gym and media center, a secured entry vestibule, and capacity for close to double its previous enrollment.

Spanish dual language immersion runs deep here. Midvale Elementary has a Spanish Dual Immersion program, Midvalley runs Spanish DLI in grades 1–5, and Union Middle School is a designated Spanish Dual Language Immersion school. If you want your child bilingual by high school, Midvale is one of the better-positioned cities in the valley for it.

East Midvale and Copperview are Community Schools. East Midvale has partnered with United Way of Salt Lake since 2012. Both schools run wraparound supports — after-school programs, family learning centers, health and social services, classroom breakfast. Copperview pairs each grade level with a cultural institution, so kindergarteners work with Discovery Gateway and fifth graders with the Natural History Museum of Utah.

5. Questions Midvale Parents Ask Me

How do school boundaries actually work in Midvale?

Canyons School District draws a geographic attendance boundary around each school. Your home address falls inside exactly one elementary boundary, one middle school boundary and one high school boundary, and that is your child's assigned school — guaranteed a seat, no application needed. Boundaries are drawn by the Board of Education, not by neighborhood, HOA or zip code, and they don't follow city lines. That's why some Midvale addresses feed Union Middle in Sandy.

How do I check which schools a specific address feeds?

Use the district's own boundary locator, not a real estate portal. Canyons publishes an address lookup tool along with separate elementary, middle and high school boundary maps on its New Student Enrollment page. Type in the street address and it returns the assigned schools.

Do this before you write an offer, not after. Third-party school data on listing sites is frequently out of date, and I have watched a family fall in love with a house on the assumption it fed a school it did not feed. Can boundaries change after I buy?

Yes, and in Midvale they have — twice recently. Canyons ran a Midvale-area elementary boundary study covering Copperview, East Midvale, Midvale and Midvalley, driven partly by the Jordan Bluffs development west of I-15, which the district projected would add 150 to 200 students. More recently, the district's 2025 boundary study approved a realignment that moves Ridgecrest students west of 1300 East into East Midvale Elementary beginning in the 2026–27 school year, putting East Midvale's enrollment around 540.

None of that is a reason to worry. It's a reason to check the district's current boundary information at the time you buy rather than trusting a listing description, and to ask whether any study is open in the area you're considering. Canyons posts active boundary studies on its website and holds public input periods before the Board votes.

What if I want a school other than my assigned one?

Utah has open enrollment, and Canyons calls it School Choice. You apply for a permit through the district's online permit portal. There are two windows:

• Early enrollment — opens November 15 and closes the first Friday in February for the following school year. This is the one you want. Schools notify families of decisions by March 6, and you have 10 calendar days to accept before the seat is released.
• Late enrollment — open year-round, for the current or the following year, with seats filled as they come available. Waitlists keep moving through spring and summer.

A permit is not guaranteed. Administrators approve based on whether space, staffing and programs are available, and they can deny a transfer over a student's discipline history. SALTA (the district's gifted and talented program) and dual language immersion have their own separate application processes through the Instructional Supports Department — they don't run through the standard permit.

The practical takeaway for a buyer: if a specific school is truly non-negotiable for your family, buy inside its boundary. A permit is a nice-to-have, not something to bet a home purchase on.

How much do schools affect home values in Midvale?

Schools move Midvale prices, but less bluntly than people expect. Midvale is compact, all of it feeds Hillcrest High, and the four elementary boundaries sit close together — so unlike some valley cities, you don't see one street commanding a large premium over the next one because of a school line. What I do see is demand: homes inside the boundaries of the newer buildings, and homes an easy walk from an elementary, tend to draw more showings from families and sit fewer days on market.

The bigger value story in Midvale is that the district has been putting real money into the buildings here — a rebuilt Hillcrest in 2021, a rebuilt Midvalley in 2020 — while Midvale's home prices still start below Sandy, Draper and Cottonwood Heights. That gap is the reason a lot of my buyers end up here. You get the same district, the IB high school, and a shorter commute downtown, at a lower entry price.

Is Midvale a good place to raise a family?

I think so, and I'll tell you why in concrete terms rather than adjectives. Four elementary schools inside a city of 5.92 square miles. An IB high school in a building that's five years old. Dual immersion Spanish from first grade through middle school. A specialized school with a therapy pool for kids who need one. And a housing market that still lets a first-time buyer get into the Salt Lake Valley.
