Best Schools in Herriman, Ut: A Parent's Guide for Families

Herriman, Ut has grown from a quiet farming town at the mouth of Butterfield Canyon into one of the largest cities in the southwest Salt Lake valley — and for most of the families I work with, schools are the first question, not the last. This is the guide I wish every family had before they started looking at houses in Herriman, Ut.

Below you will find every public and charter school serving Herriman, Ut — name, grade levels, address, and a link to each school's own website — followed by straight answers to the questions I get asked most: how boundaries actually work, how to check a specific address, how open enrollment works, and what all of this does to home values here.

How schools are organized in Herriman, Ut

Herriman, Ut is served by Jordan School District, which also covers Bluffdale, Riverton, South Jordan, West Jordan, and Copperton Township. Jordan District splits grades this way:

• Elementary — Kindergarten through 6th grade
• Middle school — grades 7 through 9
• High school — grades 10 through 12

That surprises a lot of families moving here from other states. Ninth grade is a middle school year in Jordan District, not a high school year, and high school starts in 10th grade.

Herriman, Ut also has a strong charter school presence — three charter organizations operating five campuses inside the city limits. Charter schools in Utah have no attendance boundaries at all, which I will explain further down.

Public schools serving Herriman, Ut

Elementary schools

Two things on this list catch families off guard, so let me flag them.

Ridge View and Juniper are a pair, not two separate neighborhood schools. Ridge View serves Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Juniper — which opened in August 2024, about half a mile away, to relieve crowding at Ridge View — serves 4th through 6th. They share the same boundary. If you buy in that boundary, your kids attend Ridge View for the early years and then move over to Juniper. Every online school-rating site I have seen still describes at least one of them wrong.

Foothills and Aspen carry addresses outside Herriman city limits but serve Herriman students. Foothills is listed at a Riverton address in the 84096 ZIP, which Herriman and Riverton share. Aspen sits in the Daybreak area of South Jordan and feeds Herriman High. Do not rule out a home because its assigned elementary has another city's name on the mailing address.

Middle schools

High schools

Herriman, Ut is one of the few cities its size in Utah with two comprehensive high schools inside its own borders. Mountain Ridge opened in 2019 to take pressure off Herriman High, and the split is a real dividing line in how families think about neighborhoods here.

Which schools feed which high school

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and it is the thing buyers most often get wrong. Two middle schools physically located in Herriman feed different high schools.

Herriman High School feeder: Aspen, Bastian, Daybreak, Eastlake, Golden Fields, Oak Leaf, and Silver Crest elementaries → Copper Mountain Middle and Mountain Creek Middle → Herriman High.

Mountain Ridge High School feeder: Blackridge, Butterfield Canyon, Foothills, Herriman, Juniper, and Ridge View elementaries → Fort Herriman Middle and South Hills Middle → Mountain Ridge High.

So Copper Mountain Middle, in the Anthem area, sends students to Herriman High. Fort Herriman Middle, a few minutes away, sends students to Mountain Ridge. If you have a child who wants to play for a particular program, or an older sibling already enrolled somewhere, that distinction can decide which street you buy on.

Charter schools in Herriman, Ut

Charter schools in Utah are tuition-free public schools with no attendance boundary. Where you live does not qualify or disqualify you — any Utah resident can apply, and seats are filled by lottery. Herriman, Ut has three charter organizations across five campuses.

Advantage Arts Academy describes itself as the only elementary school in Utah using the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program as its central model rather than an add-on, under the motto "Every Student is an Artist." Its lottery is open to any Utah resident.

Providence Hall is a K–12 charter of roughly 2,150 students on three buildings along Patriot Ridge Drive. It is an accredited International Baccalaureate school — the Primary Years Programme at the elementary and the Middle Years Programme at the junior high — and the high school runs a Naval JROTC program and competes in 3A Region 15. Note that Providence Hall provides essentially no bussing; plan on driving. Its lottery runs on the second Thursday of February at the elementary, and offers of enrollment must be accepted within 48 hours.

Salt Lake Academy is the school families most often have out-of-date information about. It began as Real Salt Lake Academy High School, and it recently acquired Athlos Academy of Utah — Athlos no longer operates, and its building at 12309 Mustang Trail Way is now Salt Lake Academy's K–8 West Herriman Campus. The 9–12 Zion Campus sits on Academy Parkway across from Salt Lake Community College, which it uses for concurrent enrollment. The school is built around a soccer academy model with daily training, and it states that it does not cut students from teams. If you see Athlos listed on a school-search site or even on the city's own schools page, that listing is stale.

How do school boundaries actually work here?

Every home address in Jordan School District sits inside three overlapping boundaries at once: an elementary boundary, a middle school boundary, and a high school boundary. Those boundaries do not line up with neighborhoods, subdivisions, HOAs, or ZIP codes, and they do not stop at the Herriman city line. Two houses across the street from each other can be assigned to different schools.

Boundaries are also not permanent. Herriman, Ut has added schools steadily — Mountain Ridge High in 2019, Juniper Elementary in 2024 — and every new school means the district redraws lines around it. Jordan District posts proposed boundary changes publicly before adopting them, and if you are buying in a fast-growing part of the city, it is worth knowing whether a change is under discussion.

How do I check which schools a specific address feeds?

Use the district's own lookup tool. Jordan School District publishes an address-based School Boundary Look Up map on its Planning & Enrollment site: planning.jordandistrict.org/boundaries. You type in a street address and it returns the assigned elementary, middle, and high school for the current school year.

Three cautions from experience:

1. Check the address, not the neighborhood name. "We are in Rosecrest" or "we are in Anthem" is not specific enough.
2. Do not trust the listing. A home's MLS listing, Zillow, Redfin, GreatSchools, and Niche all pull school assignments from third-party data that is frequently wrong — I ran into that repeatedly writing this guide, with schools filed under the wrong city entirely. The district's map is the only source that governs.
3. Check before you write the offer, not after. If schools are driving your purchase, verify the assignment while you still have the option to walk.

What is open enrollment, and can we choose a different school?

Yes. Utah has open enrollment, which Jordan District calls School Choice. You can request a school outside your boundary — inside or outside the district — and the district publishes the policy and application at planning.jordandistrict.org/enrollment/schoolchoice.

There are three windows:

• November 15 – December 31 — early enrollment, requests sorted by priority category, with a lottery if a school has more requests than seats.
• January 1 – the first Friday in February — early enrollment, first come, first served.
• After the first Friday in February — late enrollment, considered based on staffing ratios.

The practical points families miss:

• A permit request is separate from registration. You still register your student at your boundary school first; if the permit is approved, the record transfers.
• Approval depends on space and staffing at the receiving school. A popular school can and does fill up.
• The district cannot base the decision on test scores, grades, or athletic ability. It can consider attendance and behavior history.
• You provide transportation. No bus.
• Once approved, your student stays at least a school year, and does not have to reapply each year to stay put.

Charter schools are a separate process entirely — you apply directly to the school's own lottery, not through the district.

How do schools affect home values in Herriman, Ut?

Honestly, more than most sellers realize and less predictably than most buyers expect.

What I see on the ground in Herriman, Ut: a home in a boundary that families are actively seeking — particularly one that feeds a specific high school where a sibling is already enrolled — tends to draw more showings in its first weekend and more competing offers than an otherwise identical home a few streets over. School boundaries do not set the price the way square footage and condition do, but they move how fast a home sells and how many buyers you get to choose from.

The flip side matters too. Because boundaries here get redrawn as new schools open, a boundary is a feature that can change. I would never advise anyone to overpay for a house purely on a school assignment, and I would never advise a seller to build their entire listing story around one. What I do advise: know exactly what your home feeds, say it plainly in the listing, and be accurate — because buyers will check, and being wrong about it costs you credibility at the worst possible moment.

There is also a proximity effect that has nothing to do with rankings. Being able to walk your 6-year-old to Butterfield Canyon Elementary, or having your 10th grader five minutes from Mountain Ridge instead of across town, is worth real money to the right buyer.

Are Herriman schools crowded?

Growth has been the defining story of schools in Herriman, Ut for two decades, and the district's answer has been to keep building — Mountain Ridge High in 2019, Juniper Elementary in 2024, and the Ridge View/Juniper grade split. It is a district that adds capacity rather than letting buildings overflow indefinitely. But it does mean the school your neighbor's kids attended is not automatically the school yours will, and it is worth asking about enrollment and any pending boundary study for the specific school you are counting on.
